We said goodbye to our beloved Scout yesterday. He was a cheerful, loyal, and loving companion for just under twelve years. He will be greatly missed. Will and Tom have always had him here. Kate was 3 and Jack was 1 when we met him for the first time and brought him home. His name was Sunny at the nearby farm, and he was a puppy who was eating cat food! We quickly changed his name to the more manly Scout!
Scout was well traveled. He lived in Illinois, London, and most recently California. He loved to walk and run and chase squirrels. He played with Nutley and the cats and protected the children. He detested anyone ringing the doorbell.
Scout has been battling seizures for close to 2 years. In the beginning, it was manageable, no medication needed. Recently the frequency and number of seizures each cluster had increased dramatically. Last weekend he had a grand mal seizure every 3 hours all weekend and they were very, very violent :(. It was very hard to watch, and he was injuring himself each time.
On Monday we went to the vet to start phenobarbital, something I had been putting off but had discussed with our vet. Sadly, Scout reacted very negatively to the medications and we took him off after a couple of days. But, without the meds, we found ourselves right back to waiting for the next set of even worse seizures.
Friday was a good day for Scout. He ate as many girl scout cookies as he could, and since the meds had worn off, he was free to roam around the house. I am grateful it was a good day and we saw a glimmer of our loving dog.
Scout, we love you forever and always.
