Orinda: First week update

We have been in the house for a little over a week already!  Still no furniture yet, but soon enough.  The truck was supposed to be here tomorrow (Friday, 7/31) but I guess the radiator broke outside of Salt Lake City, and now we are looking at a Monday delivery. Friday would have been much better, but there is nothing to be done but wait.

We have been keeping busy exploring the area and getting familiar with the town and roads.

We joined the neighborhood pool, Meadow, so have been spending time almost every day swimming.  The kids are surprisingly tan already!  I didn't think they would get tan, but a week in the CA sun has proved me wrong.

This week has been exceptionally, unseasonably hot, so we have slowed down on our gardening and hiking.    Today will be much cooler, back into the low 80s.

We have never seen as many days of bright blue sky in IL as we have this week in CA.  It really is amazingly beautiful here.

Kate has joined a soccer club and yesterday accepted a position on the B team.  She is close to being an A level player, but needs to work on her ball skills.  No surprise, but a goal to improve.

Jack and Will have wrestling signups on Monday, with practice beginning in November.  The club does not allow parents to cheer or coach, so I am hoping for quieter matches!  I have been emailing with the head coach, and he seems super nice.

Tom has kindergarten playgroups scheduled until school starts at the end of the month.  We hope to meet lots of new friends.

The boys (and Kate) are all registered for school, and I hope the boys will be assigned the elementary school two blocks from the house.  There is only one middle school, so I know that Kate will be at OIS.

We have already had a major sewer issue (clogged main line from past use - buildup) that required the super cool cutting device, and have three crazy big dead trees on the lot that need to be removed.  I'm trying to work the utility/PGE side to have them removed at no cost, but that will only possibly work for two.  I am sure we will post pictures when the work is being completed.

The yard is amazing, but right now is being serviced by full time gardeners.  I have hired them for the first month (5 guys, once a week, 2 hours each visit).  And will move to an every other week type of situation or less.  They tell me I didn't buy a house but a park.  They have been in full control for the past 7 years with the owners never doing any gardening work, so this will be a change for all.

This is a small town and everyone seems very proud of living here.  Everyone has been very welcoming so hopefully we won't have any problems making new friends.  More updates soon!

First Day 4th Grade!

Bye Bye Birdie!

Tom was Ed Sullivan in the production this weekend of Bye Bye Birdie!  Kate donned her sock-hop costume from 5th grade to embrace the spirit of the show. For those of you unfamiliar with the musical,  Bye Bye Birdie is set in 1958 and was influenced by Elvis Presley being drafted into the Army in 1957.    Congrats, Tom!!

100 days left

We have just over 100 days left in the UK.  The kids are super excited to get back to the States, and we are too.  We have had a great time here, but look forward to being 'home'. This is the last week of term, and only term 3 left!  The last term supposedly goes fast, as the weather improves, there are Suzuki concerts, the talent show, and lots of field trips. We have some travel still lined up, plus some visitors to join us - looking forward to seeing you, Auntie Sarah and Uncle Aaron!  Stayed tuned for pictures of our last few adventures. We are starting to get the ball rolling on movers and pet shippers and all that fun stuff.  And we have to have the whole flat cleaned once our stuff is out. One step at a time!
