Woke up to call to prayer. which was lucky as alarm didn't go off! i had missed hearing it in Istanbul. Staying in business hotel so many Americans at breakfast. Honestly hadn't seen that many in one room since we left the states!
Guide named Zack and sounds and looks a lot like Ricardo montolban.
8am start. hour 1/2 drive north to Jerash. Beautiful hills mountains and valleys.
Area more wealthy than we had seen in Egypt Lots of University. tourism only 20 percent.
We are less than 5 km from Syrian border. Feeling like we should have some kind of Guard with us. But Just guide and driver.
About 300 sunny days a year. It is beautiful this morning.
Umm Quays. Ancient Roman city. Small theatre to seat 2500. Roads, shops, churches. But location is magnificent. Standing in Jordan but at the triangle between Jordan, Syria and Israel. Borders only a few hundred yards away. We could hear the sounds of the 24 hour Israeli border patrol planes breaking the sound barrier. A little unnerving to see the old military barracks from the 1960's.
we had lunch of traditional Jordanian food of hummus, mixed grill, minced lamb. We love their version of pita/ naan.
Next we explored Jerash. A huge Roman city still intact. We spent the afternoon viewing the city including the temples to Zeus and Artemis.
