Tom's surgery this week

Tom had minor surgery this Wednesday to correct a hydrocele.  It is similar to a hernia surgery.  He has recovered very quickly, and aside from the two inch long wound on his belly, you probably would have no idea!

We had the surgery at the Portland Hospital, and it all went very smoothly.    Anjie's fragile mind couldn't get up the courage to do the hard part of being there when Tom was put under the anesthesia, so Paul got the job.  I call it division of labor.  He said it was pretty hard.

Tom had to be at the hospital at 7am, and no food, water or nursing 4 hours before surgery, which was scheduled around half 8.  He awoke at 5 and was very, very unhappy with me.  We took a walk up to the high street to try to distract ourselves.  At about half 6 Paul took him to the hospital, and they started the surgery at 9.  I arrived around 9:30, and had about a 15 minute wait until the end of the surgery.  When I first saw Tom I was a total mess!  The nurses weren't worried about Tom, they thought I might faint or something.  "You ok, mum?"  "Here's a chair, mum."

We stayed at the hospital until just after lunch, and then went home.  For the past 2 days Tom has been taking pain killers every few hours (just Tylenol and ibuprofen) and now we will use it only as needed.

Here's Tom during his nap after surgery.

First Day 4th Grade!

Bye Bye Birdie!

Tom was Ed Sullivan in the production this weekend of Bye Bye Birdie!  Kate donned her sock-hop costume from 5th grade to embrace the spirit of the show. For those of you unfamiliar with the musical,  Bye Bye Birdie is set in 1958 and was influenced by Elvis Presley being drafted into the Army in 1957.    Congrats, Tom!!

100 days left

We have just over 100 days left in the UK.  The kids are super excited to get back to the States, and we are too.  We have had a great time here, but look forward to being 'home'. This is the last week of term, and only term 3 left!  The last term supposedly goes fast, as the weather improves, there are Suzuki concerts, the talent show, and lots of field trips. We have some travel still lined up, plus some visitors to join us - looking forward to seeing you, Auntie Sarah and Uncle Aaron!  Stayed tuned for pictures of our last few adventures. We are starting to get the ball rolling on movers and pet shippers and all that fun stuff.  And we have to have the whole flat cleaned once our stuff is out. One step at a time!
