One distinction between US and the UK is the naming conventions when referring to floors of a building. In the US we tend to call the entry level floor 1, and then, for example, the floor with the bedrooms in our Naperville home 2. Here everything starts with ground. So our kitchen is on the ground floor, the family room (up one flight of stairs) is 1, the master and boys' beds are on 2, and Kate is up on 3.
It still takes us a while to process the difference, and it is most evident in a elevator when we are trying to get back to the exit.
